Learn More About Common Pests In The Bay Area
When it comes to pests, no two creatures are alike. They all present unique challenges and problems, and they all require different types of treatment to eliminate them. Let Bay Pest help you cut through the confusion with our pest library. Here you’ll find the most important information about the pests that are most likely to invade your Bay Area home or business.

Ants
Three of the most common species of ants living in our area are Argentine ants, odorous house ants, and carpenter ants. All ants have three body segments, antenna, six legs, and the reproductive members have wings.

Bed Bugs
Adult bed bugs grow to about a quarter of an inch in length and are reddish-brown. After feeding, they turn a deeper reddish-purple color, and their body swells in size. These insects are wingless and cannot jump. To move from place to place, they hitchhike on people or our belongings.

Cockroaches
Cockroaches have an oval-shaped body and long antennae. Most have wings, but cockroaches are not known to be great flyers. Cockroaches use their six legs to move quickly from place to place.

Fleas
One of the most frustrating pests to deal with is the flea. Their tiny size and ability to jump quickly out of sight make them a pest that is difficult to prevent and eliminate. Fleas are wingless insects with hard flattened bodies that are reddish-brown.

Mites
Mites are small pests (most are about the size of a pinhead) that are closely related to spiders. There is a wide range of mites that live both outside and inside our homes. Mites have piercing mouthparts that they use to feed.

Mosquitoes
Biting insects that are relentless in their pursuit of blood meals, mosquitoes are a pest that knows how to annoy people and stop us from being able to enjoy our outdoor space. Though mosquitoes are weak flyers, they still can find us, bite us, and feed on our blood.

Rodents
Rodents plague home and business owners throughout most of the country for most of the year. They have become used to living near people and can find their way into any structure at any time. The most common rodent intruders are mice and rats.

Spiders
Spiders are predatory, feeding on insects and other spiders. They are beneficial in helping to control insect populations but are less beneficial when they decide to live in big numbers in our yards or, even worse, inside of our homes!

Stinging Insects
Stinging insects are those pests that can make spending time outside in your yard stressful and dangerous. Stinging insects have a stinger located at the end of their abdomen that predatory species use to paralyze prey with and that pollinators and predators use to defend themselves.

Termites
As one of the few organisms that can feed on cellulose, termites living in wooded and forested areas are eco-important and help to break-down decaying wood, plants, and other materials made of cellulose.
