Some of the common cockroach facts include that these insects belong to the order Blattodea, have a flat body, antennae, and some are equipped with wings. Depending on the species, cockroaches will range in length from ½ of an inch to more than two inches and appear in many different colors. They are one of the most common pests that invade homes and businesses, and they remain one of the leading public health concerns.

Immature cockroaches that are still developing are referred to as nymphs, which later molt and transition to adulthood. They are largely nocturnal pests that have adapted to living near humans; however, they tend to scatter and hide quickly when they encounter humans.

Many people struggle to determine how to get rid of cockroach infestations or mistakenly underestimate the resiliency of these pests. Once an indoor infestation develops, it is very challenging to eliminate them completely without receiving assistance from a professional pest controller.

The Types Of Cockroaches That Invade Bay Area Homes

Some of the most common types include:

  • German cockroaches (Blattella germanica): German cockroaches are among the most prevalent species found indoors in California, most commonly in homes, schools, restaurants, and any institutions where food is stored, prepared, or consumed. German cockroaches have a tan or brown-colored body and two unique black stripes behind their head.
  • Brown-banded cockroaches (Supella longipalpa): Brown-banded cockroaches are smaller, with a maximum body length of just longer than ½ of an inch, and have brown or tan-colored “band-like” markings. They prefer very warm temperatures, and females can generate hundreds of offspring each year.
  • Oriental cockroaches (Blatta orientalis): The body of an oriental cockroach appears either dark brown or black. They prefer damp and cool climates, and those indoors are commonly found in basements, crawlspaces, or garages.
  • American cockroaches (Periplaneta americana): The American cockroach is a large species that often exceeds two inches long. They appear in a reddish-brown shade and have a unique “figure-eight” type marking.
